V Reasons Why Diabetes is Probably in My Future

V Reasons Why Diabetes is Probably in my Future

Reason 1. I have a sweet tooth.

I have the dream diet of a five-year-old. I eat candy almost daily, I absolute adore chocolate, and I can
eat butter cream frosting out of the can with a spoon like yogurt. (Most people would gag if they even imagined somebody eating as much frosting as I do at once). Dessert is my favorite part of any meal, and nine times out of ten I would choose to eat a cupcake over steak.

Reason 2. Carbs.

My love for baked good has almost a 100% correlation with my love for sugar. The only thing better than cupcakes are whole cakes with their fluffiness maximized. My friends literally buy me candy and bake me cookies for my birthday, put them in a cutesy little box or gift bag, and I feel like the most blessed kid in America. Like if you want me to fall in love with you, just bake me something and stick a ring on top. In addition to the sweet side of carbs there is the savory side. I'm talking about the breads, pastas, and starches. Macaroni and cheese is my favorite food. By far. Like it outshines cupcakes. I could probably eat macaroni everyday if my life style allowed it, alas it does not. My favorite mac 'n' cheese is my Aunt Rainey's mac 'n' cheese: sure it has two boxes of butter in it, (I kid you not.) and is probably the poster child for cholesterol, but man, it is DELICIOUS.

*Disclaimer: I am in no way endorsing the use of macaroni and cheese as an entree.

Reason 3. I am an athlete.

As an athlete of 10+ years, my lifestyle is very active and physical. I play sports and work out daily year-round so my awful diet is basically balanced out by the amount of activity I do. This is great for right now that I'm still in high school and athletics is naturally part of my daily regimen, but it will serve to be an issue once I graduate. I don't plan on playing any college sports, aside from a rec team or two, so my diet of sweets and starches will have nothing to balance it out! That means I would have to limit myself in what I eat or go to the gym for two hours daily...

Reason 4. I'm really good at cooking.

Not to toot my own horn, but I am pretty proficient when it comes to cooking. I can whip up anything
from salads and soups to breads and pastries. This is a problem because if I cook something delicious but unhealthy, I might just keep on cooking and eating it. I have on many occasions baked cookies just for the pleasure of decorating them, and then ate my art. That's not very proactive as an athlete but I would make a really good grandma.

Reason 5. I KNOW better, I just don't DO better.

The worst part about all of this is the fact that I am aware of the fact that diabetes could be in my future, yet I continue to eat the way that I do. It's like being a smoker and knowing that every time you take a puff you are drastically increasing your chances of getting lung cancer but for me it's every time I eat a piece of Halloween candy or accept a slice of pie I know that I am drastically increasing my chances of getting diabetes. I will try, slowly but surely, to change my eating habits and reduce my sugar/carb intake but it is going to be very hard with the holidays right around the corner!
